The Future of GH

General Hospital will turn 50 in April of 2013 and many wonder if the soap will live to see that milestone.

Since the demise of All My Children and One Life to Live, the fate of General Hospital has been the subject of many online message boards. Soap fans don't want to see the last ABC soap go but like everything else, it is about money.

ABC's soap replacement shows are not doing well in ratings. Lesson learned for ABC execs- don't mess with soap fans. To think that a soap fan would just start watching another talk show instead of getting their daily dose of drama is ridiculous. Many of us boycotted the new shows and in return, the show that took OLTL's timeslot has been cancelled due to low ratings.

(I will not even mention the NAMES of these shows out of protest!)

As GH brings on several OLTL characters, many longtime GH fans are not happy. They want to see GH veteran characters return. That is understandable.

As a OLTL fan, I miss many of Llanview's residents and at first I found it exciting to see them interact with my favorite Port Charles residents.

Long-term will mixing these characters help or hurt GH?

Since OLTL ended, I personally feel that the storylines on GH have "sped" up and most of the time it has been refreshing. There is plenty going on and there is just the right amount of "leaving us hanging and wanting more" but there is the occasional "enough already" feelings with a few storylines.

The whole Maxi confessing to murder storyline is annoying and although the question of who really did kill Lisa is unsolved; honestly, who really cares? The character is gone and good riddance.

The whole Kate/Connie storyline is something that OLTL did often. Viki/Niki and Jess/Tess (and I am sure there were more) was classic but even the most faithful fan got tired of the whole dual personality stuff.

It is a shame that Jason couldn't wake up from yet another brain injury and "remember" who he was before he became a mob hitman. It would have given Monika and Edward a storyline. Sometimes I miss the days where the Quartermaine's were the focus and the hospital was where the action was.

Although I adore Sonny and Johnny, the mob wars is wearing thin on me.

Jason and Sam's love story has taken a turn that they may not recover from. It was predictable that Franco would turn out to be the baby daddy. Didn't we all see that coming? How do they move forward from that?

Soaps are meant to be outrageous but honestly, letting Heather Webber out? C'mon.

I am enjoying Lulu acting like a Spencer even though we all know Dante will have to save her eventually. I miss Luke being Luke.

I want some adventure, romance, secrets and surprises.

Hopefully GH will be bringing us more of what they became the best at.

Maxie's mother is set to return. Anna Devine will be staying. Heather is going to stir up some trouble which means maybe more Monika? Kristina will be coming home, angry about how she got into Yale.

Let's see more of the old-fashioned drama that got us hooked in the first place. Calm it down with the mob wars and give us some drama. The ratings will stay strong and GH will have a future.
